Where It All Began
Founders Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead saw a need for shoes that better supported natural movement. They began modifying traditional running shoes in the back of their store—literally cooking and carving them to remove excess heel lift. That simple, innovative idea led to Balanced Cushioning™, Altra’s signature platform that keeps the heel and forefoot level to promote better alignment and a more natural stride.
They didn’t stop there. Altra also introduced FootShape™ Fit, a roomier toe box that mirrors the natural shape of the foot—especially in the toes. Unlike the narrow, tapered design of most running shoes, FootShape™ gives your toes space to splay, stabilize, and push off with power.
