Be Safe. Be Seen.
November is Running Safety Month
STAY SAFE OUT THERE
November rolls in with shorter days and low-light conditions for early morning and late evening runs. This should not deter you! With the right preparation and gear, you can enjoy running safely and confidently all hours of the day (or night).
GEAR SPOTLIGHT
Reflective Gear: Invest in high-quality reflective clothing (such as vests, jackets, and accessories) in materials that reflect light from car headlights, making you more visible to drivers.
Bright Colors: Brightly colored clothing stands out, especially during dawn and dusk. Neon hues help increase visibility even if they aren't reflective.
Reflective Vests: These are lightweight and easy to layer, and they ensure you are visible from all angles.
LACE UP + STAY BRIGHT
Use Headlamps or Flashlights: Illuminate your path with a headlamp or handheld flashlight. This not only helps you see where you’re going but also makes you more noticeable to others.
Mind Your Headphones: If you listen to music or podcasts while running, keep the volume low enough to hear your surroundings. Consider using bone-conducting headphones for added awareness.
LED Armbands or Clip-Ons: Attach these to your arms or clothing for added visibility without bulk.
Reflective Shoe Straps: Don’t forget about your footwear! Reflective straps can make your shoes stand out.
SAFETY FIRST
Stay on Well-Lit Paths: Whenever possible, stick to routes that are well-lit and familiar. Avoid dark or isolated areas to minimize risks.
Be Alert: Stay aware of your surroundings. Limit distractions, such as loud music, and keep your phone accessible in case of emergencies.
Run with a Buddy: If you can, find a running partner. There’s safety in numbers, and it can also make your runs more enjoyable.
Plan Your Routes: Familiarize yourself with your routes in advance, including any potential hazards. Consider running loops in well-trafficked areas.
Utilize Safety Apps: Download running apps that allow you to share your location with friends or family for added safety. Some apps even have built-in safety features like emergency alerts.
Warm Up Properly: Ensure your muscles are warmed up to prevent injury, especially when it's colder outside. Incorporate dynamic stretches into your routine.
